Course description:

This course provides a clear, practical introduction to spiritual abuse as a safeguarding concern. Participants will learn what spiritual abuse is, how it develops, and why it causes deep emotional, psychological, and spiritual harm. Through survivor insights, real‑world scenarios, and safeguarding‑focused teaching, the course equips delegates to recognise harmful patterns, respond appropriately when concerns arise, and help create safer, healthier spiritual environments.

Designed for anyone working or volunteering within faith‑based settings, this training offers grounded, accessible guidance on the four key areas of learning: The Harm, The Distortion, The Ambiguity, and The Practice.

Course Outcomes:

  • Understand the core components of spiritual abuse and how it differs from other forms of harm.
  • Identify indicators, patterns, and impacts across faith contexts.
  • Recognise how power, vulnerability, and community culture shape risk.
  • Understand dynamics such as coercive control, distorted spirituality, and harmful leadership practices.
  • Respond proportionately in complex or ambiguous situations.
  • Use trauma‑aware, victim‑survivor‑centred approaches to all safeguarding practices.
